The Turtle Princess

As the new year arrives we are going to be starting a brand new theme in our creative ballet classes – The Turtle Princess. This story is based on the Japanese fairy tale Urashimo Taro and it was choreographed into a ballet in 2020 by The New National Theatre, Tokyo. Watch the link below to see a preview to the ballet with its wonderful colours and images.

Once upon a time there lived on an island a kindhearted young man called Urashima Taro. One day Taro rescues a sea turtle that he finds of the beach and helps it swim back into the ocean. The turtle turns out to belong to the princess of an underwater palace.  As a thank you the princess invites Taro to come and visit her underwater world, where he spends many days watching the beautiful sea creatures dance in and out or the coral.

As we explore the story we will be watching clips of the ballet, looking at examples of Japanese illustrations of the story, introducing the children to the sounds of Japanese classical and folk music as well as bringing to life all kinds of  underwater creatures to dance with Taro and the turtle  princess.
